I’m a big fan of cereal these days but didn’t grow up eating much cereal as a kid, at least not for breakfast. When  did eat cereal, it wasn’t the sugary brands marketed toward kids because my parents didn’t buy those kinds. Now as an adult, regular Cheerios, Kashi, and hot oatmeal are my favorites but lately, Magic Spoon has cracked its way into my rotation, with one flavor in particular standing out above the rest. But we’ll get to that.

What’s Magic Spoon cereal and what makes it so special?

Let me get you the facts.

Magic Spoon’s claim to fame is that it’s healthy and just like the cereals you enjoyed as a kid — just without all the sugar. Magic Spoon cereal has an impressive nutritional panel so you’ll feel good about eating it or sharing it with your kids. Without any artificial anything, it is also high protein, gluten free, low carb, grain free, non-GMO and has zero grams of sugar.

Instead of sugar, Magic Spoon is sweetened with monk fruit extract and allulose, which their website explains “is a ‘rare’ sugar found in things like figs and maple syrup. It tastes just like ‘regular’ sugar, but has almost zero glycemic impact and almost zero calories (less than 0.4 cal/g).”

Each serving has about 13 grams of protein which comes from the milk protein blend (whey protein isolate and casein).

The hype about Magic Spoon cereal intrigued me — especially the tagline “childlike cereal for grown-ups” — so I bought a case and I was blown away.

I first noticed two things about Magic Spoon cereal before even opening the box — the fun, brightly colored package design and the size of the box. No, it’s not cheap and brought me right back to my NYU days where I’d happily buy $10 Cheerios from Gristede’s in NYC because there were no cheaper options.

One box of Magic Spoon is 7 ounces, so not a big box. They say each box is 5 servings, but in reality, each box will get you about 3 bowls unless you’re having a really small serving. Four if you’re lucky if you’re pouring a snack-size bowl. But 5 servings, no way.

magic spoon review cereal flavors

What flavors does Magic Spoon come in?

They have 6 flavors and the 4 main staples you get in a variety pack are: Peanut Butter, Frosted, Fruity, and Cocoa. The cereal pieces are little O shapes like Cheerios.

They also have Blueberry and Cinnamon. I’ve tried all but the Blueberry.

In addition to the 6 staples, Magic Spoon is always coming out with limited edition flavors like Birthday Cake and Cookies & Cream.

Are Magic Spoon cereal flavors any good? Here are my thoughts:

Peanut Butter: Perfect for PB lovers. Strong nutty taste. Tastes great mixed with Cocoa to switch it up.

Frosted: The sweetest smelling and tasting offering of the bunch and just wasn’t for me.

Fruity: Smells and tastes just like Froot Loops. Not overpowering or artificial, nor is it too sweet. Colorful and DELICIOUS!!!!

Cocoa: Strong, rich chocolate smell out of the box but upon tasting it, the chocolate taste is more moderate, not overpowering and not overly sweet. Excellent.

Cinnamon: Smells delicious like a cinnamon bun with a moderately sweet crunch and not overpowering at all.

What’s the best Magic Spoon flavor?

Fruity. Hands down. My answer here to what’s the best Magic Spoon flavor surprised even me because I figured I’d love the peanut butter or cinnamon the best but nope. Fruity tastes exactly like what I remember Froot Loops to be like. They aren’t sweet or artificial tasting at all. Just a solid, flavorful cereal that lives up to its name of fruity.

Here’s how I rank the Magic Spoon flavors from best to worst for my personal tastes:

Fruity, Cinnamon, Peanut Butter, Cocoa, Frosted

NOTE: If you aren’t used to eating foods with protein powder, you may find certain flavors to have a slight aftertaste. I found this to be the case with the sweetest flavor, Frosted. It smelled a bit sickly sweet out of the box and the aftertaste wasn’t great, like some protein bars or protein shakes. But Frosted is my dad’s favorite flavor, so different strokes for different folks. It may also depend on what type of milk you use. But I wanted to make sure I mentioned this in my Magic Spoon review for those of you sensitive to aftertastes.
